Wednesday,
October 1st,
7:30 p.m.
The house was located on a very busy street.
It was half-past seven.
Sascha wanted to burst the front door but he hesitated
while building up the courage. He wondered what would
await him on the other side. What would he say when the
door was opened by another young gay man.
He hesitated, then decided to walk around the block
again, trying to muster the emotional strength to go
inside. He was back in front of the building, staring
again at the door. Just then two other boys came by and
headed up the steps straight for the door. "I had
better get away quick," Sascha thought, and so he
took another walk around the block

Wednesday, October 1st,
9 p.m.
Sascha was sitting in the subway
.heading
home. He was nervous and a bit angry with himself. Why
had he not managed to go inside the building? Shit!Wednesday, October 8th
"Today, I have to do it. Today I have
to succeed." These were Sascha's thoughts when he
woke up in the morning.
Now he found himself in front of the building again -
staring at the door once more. He moved slowly up the
steps and already his knees were weak, but he collected
himself, took a deep breath, and pushed the door open.
Inside, there was a dark staircase. "Youth group on
the 3rd floor" read the sign on the table
at the bottom of the stairs. With some fear and concern,
Sascha started to climb the stairs. He began to hear
voices and laughter. "Yes," he thought,
"there is obviously something going on."
When he got to the third floor landing, he saw a door
that opened into an apartment. Sitting on the stairs were
three boys who gave him the once-over
from head to
toe. Before Sascha could even say hello, one of the boys
jumped up, extended his hand, and said, "Hi! I'm
Martin. Are you here for the first time?"
"How simple," Sascha thought. Somehow he
believed it would be far more complicated than it turned
out to be. The young man showed Sascha to the group, gave
him several informational pamphlets and talked with
Sascha for more than an hour about coming out.
For Sascha, the process was highly interesting. He was
absorbing every bit of information like a dry sponge. It
was fantastic!
Soon Martin introduced Sascha to members of the group.
First a pair of his colleagues. He left Sascha to talk
with the couple, and in a few moments Sascha forgot all
about the nervous feelings he had had.
In a short time, Sascha learned more about the boys in
the group and was deep in discussions about God, the
world, and coming out. He was mega-thrilled to hear their
stories and learn about their coming out experiences.
