Today Sascha decided to tell his mother. Because his father was out of town, he figured he could talk to his mother in peace and quiet. "What's the matter, Sascha? You haven't helped me in the kitchen in years. What's going on?" Sascha took a deep breath. "Mom, I have something important to tell you. I...I'm gay." There, it was out at last. He waited for his mother's reaction. She put the knife down on the kitchen table and said, "Is this a joke?" "No Mom, I've fallen in love with a schoolmate. And as a matter of fact, I have always been more attracted to boys than to girls." His mother responded with "That's just a phase. You'll grow out of it." Sascha said, "I don't think so." His mother replied, "My son is not gay. That's impossible." Sascha was unable to say anything. He threw the kitchen towel on the floor and ran out of the room. He felt angry. His mother could not understand or accept what Sascha was telling her. Shit! What should he do?

These last two days went badly for Sascha. He avoided his mother because she was both agitated and in a foul mood. Not another word was said about his homosexuality. Finally, his father spoke with him. Sascha's father was understanding; he wished Sascha and he would have talked about the matter earlier. The father said Sascha's mother could not imagine how her son was different from other boys. She kept asking herself what she had done wrong.

"Relax Sascha," said his sister. "Mom just needs time. You know how long she thinks about stuff before she can deal with it." "But she doesn't take me seriously. She says it's only a phase. I didn't just sit up in bed one day and decide to be gay. And it won't just go away." "I know that, and father does too; you're just going to have to give Mom the time to adjust to the idea. Remember, she wasn't prepared for the news you dropped on her. You've had a long time to occupy yourself with your gayness." "I didn't expect her to explode into a fit of joy," said Sascha. "But she should accept me as I am." Sascha stood up and walked to the kitchen. His sister followed him, and when he took a drink out of the refrigerator, she said, "You know what a committed Catholic Mother is. You can imagine how difficult it is for her to accept your being homosexual." Sascha closed the kitchen door angrily and said, "Why is the Church against us? I can't do anything about that."
